On a chilly Tuesday morning, number twelve seed Ranger College and number eight seed Lewis and Clark Community College met at Pat Hartley Field in another pool play matchup. Both teams looked to be evenly matched in the early minutes of the game. But it was Lewis and Clark that was first on the board.
In the 29th minute, freshman forward Melvin Beckett sent the ball to the back of the net from about 15 yards out to score the first goal of the match. Both teams were able to get several shots off on goal but neither was able to score again in the first half. Coming out of halftime, the action heated up early on. Lewis and Clark extended its lead with another goal by Melvin Beckett to make it 2-0.
Ranger College looked to avoid the shutout and put its only goal of the game on the board just five minutes later. Tyler Logue charged down the field with the ball before passing to teammate Carlos Bonilla who sent the ball into the back of the net. Ten minutes later, Bonilla was involved in a collision going into a header for the ball. He was knocked out and paramedics were called. He was alert and responsive but was taken to the hospital for evaluation and precautionary measures.
Play resumed and Lewis and Clark added to its lead with another goal in the 81st minute. Didrik Rinde found the back of the net to extend the lead to two goals. Lewis and Clark was able to shut down Ranger’s offense to end the game with a 3-1 win.
*Update: Bonilla has been released from the hospital. He was diagnosed with a concussion but passed all of his tests with flying colors.
